Book of the Month for January 2013

It is fitting that this is the first book of the year. It is brilliant! One of the best YA novels I have read. The first I’ve read by this author, though there are 2 others I’ve wanted to read. It seriously addresses social issues of our time and our future, though it feels like it is just telling a story. It also incorporates young people in the solution making process, using imagination and creativity.

When I heard about the death of Aaron
Swartz this week, I immediately thought of this book. I wonder if Doctorow was thinking of his case when he wrote it. I think the prosecution was less for his “stealing” than it was for his developing software to make massive online activism effective.
