Inkheart by Cornelia Funke

This is a book that is perpetually out of our local library. I increased my searching when I learned of the movie soon to come out (Mar 19, 2008). The book was slightly disappointing to me as I was very excited about the topic. It could be it was better before translation, and there were some fantastic details. Still looking forward to the movie. The slow parts will be edited out.

Just finished Inkspell, the sequel. Only read it because my son really liked it. The second book is much better than Inkheart. It is still long and drags in places, but not near as much dragging. I found the story stronger and fascinating in parts. The characters are also more developed.

Not going to be one of my favorites, but good fantasy for middle graders.

In Inkspell, all the characters except Aunt Elinor and Darius go into the Inkworld and become part of the story. The author Fenoglio is writing within the book, creating new characters and creating havoc. The characters are controlling their own lives more, some knowing they are characters from a book and others not.
