Here’s another ultra-condensed offering for the famed Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, master of ridiculousness.
For any Wheel of Time fans out there, I’ve determined that Captain Carrot is ta’veren (based on a statement by Sergeant Angua), maybe Commander Vimes, too (based on his many visits from Death).

Hmm. Haven’t read the Wheel of Time books, but I’m crazy about Terry Pratchett’s books and characters, including Vimes and Carrot. (So bring on the literary conspiracy theories!)

Kate,
I highly recommend The Wheel of Time. It is one of my favorite series now. Be warned, it is long and addictive, with thick books. Not as light-hearted as Pratchett. But it is another comprehensive world, with political references.
Just read Thief of Time. Here I have been thinking about the lightness of the books. But in a way they are not. Incredible depth for books that are quick and comical.

I’ll admit I tend to shy away from series with numerous books in them (with the exception of Pratchett!), but maybe I give the first Wheel of Time book a try–I’ve heard a lot of good things about the series.

My favorite part of WoT is the characters. Several main characters, many of them independent women. In a sense historical fiction, though fantasy. There is some played down type of humor, but the focus is more playing with magical ideas and psychological and social concepts. One book takes me about two weeks to read and sometimes drags, but it is excellent.
Can you recommend more adult fantasy? My kids are reading Goodkind right now. I’m sure there is nobody else like Pratchett.
